Reading Skills

READING SKILLS
INTRODUCTION: Reading is one of the skills of learning a language. By all counts it is the most important skill for students who learn English as a second language.
TYPES OF READING
SILENT READING: The purpose of Silent reading is to encourage the students to read with comprehension.
READING ALOUD: Read Aloud provides practice in good speech habits.
SKIMMING:  Skimming is related to the speed of the reading. In this the reader reads the whole passage rapidly to get the gist of the passage.
SCANNING: Scanning involves finding out the required information from the text or other reading material.
INTENSIVE READING:  Reading the passage for different purposes is called ‘Intensive Reading’. It is also called ‘Critical Reading’ or ‘Reading for Comprehension’.
EXTENSIVE READING: Reading the passage in the workbook and supplementary Reader for enjoyment is called Extensive Reading.
READING COMPRHENSION: Reading with comprehension involves a number of activities like recognizing words and understanding the meanings of words, associating the meanings of different words, understanding the meaning of whole passage and finally forming ideas on what has been read.
